Mason Smedley

Hello there...I’m Mason...Mason Smedley. I live in Hillsboro OR with my Mom & Dad, two big brothers and my little sister. I feel bad for my Dad since he has to work all day while my Mom gets to stay home and play with us kids. Wow is she lucky! We like to play games, take walks and just “hang out”. And sometimes we search outside for bugs and other animals. I once found a frog that’s now my very favorite pet. His name is Pebble because he’s the color of a rock. It’s so fun to watch him catch and eat the flies we put in his cage.

Besides Pebble, I also have a hermit crab, a beta fish and four salamanders that live outside in our pond. My big brothers and I never get tired of hunting for frogs so who knows...maybe someday Pebble will have a friend to keep him company.

This year, on February 25th, I turned 8 years old. My Mom says I’m wise beyond my years so I guess that means I’m smarter then most 8 year olds. She also says I’m tough, bright and funny and that I make her laugh. I like to make people laugh, even my nurses. I think they get a kick out of me. They tease me about liking blonds. But I just tell them why not “blonds” since it’s a proven fact that blonds have more fun. I guess I really am smarter than a third grader.

Like I said before, I spend time hanging out with my big brothers. Or should I say they hang out with me. We play video games and sometimes we even walk to the store. And when I’m tired of “hanging out”...I tell my brothers it’s “quiet time” and get out my drawing pad. I love to color and draw and have been told by Mom that I’m a perfectionist. But the thing is...most famous artists are perfectionist so I’m no different.

My Dad and I like to go fishing and sometimes we invite my big brothers to go along. We have some pretty good “fish stories” that we share with Mom when we get home. I always catch more fish then anyone else. I guess it’s because I’m so patient. I once caught a Sharp Nose shark off the coast of Florida that was bigger than me. This is one of the fish stories I tell. But when I tell it people look at me with a big grin on their face like they don’t believe me. Go figure!

When I grow up, I want to be a Life Flight helicopter pilot. That has to be the best job ever. Even though I don’t like being at the hospital, I do like looking for the helicopters while I’m there. And if I don’t get to be a Life Flight helicopter pilot, then I want to do something that helps other people.

Next month my family, friends and I are hosting a concert to help raise money to find a cure for my disease, Juvenile Dermatomyositis. Blake Lewis from American Idol will be there along with my good friends Savannah Outen, Shelby Marie and Jessica Lerner. Jessica is the best!! She wrote a song about me called “Hey Mason” and will be singing it to me and all the other kids with my disease . I can hardly wait. I would really love it if you could come to the concert and help support this great cause. And if you do come...maybe I can share some more of my fish stories.
